Chantal D. Smith

Chantal D. Smith is an assistant professor of economics at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. She completed her doctoral studies at Howard University in 2021 under the advisement of Dr. William E. Spriggs. Dr. Smith’s primary field of research is labor economics, with particular interest in education (K-12) and the role of institutions in driving public policy.
Her current research interests include prison privatization and recidivism, charter schools and school quality measures, and the role of the military in school desegregation in the American South, with particular focus on the impacts to marginalized communities.
